What to know
How it is performed
Depending on the diagnosis, surgery may separate joined digits, correct selected extra digits, reconstruct tissue or repair injured structures. Imaging, splinting and hand therapy may be part of the plan. Not every condition is treated with the same operation.
Who may consider a consultation?
People with a hand injury, congenital difference or functional concern can seek assessment. Timing for children considers growth and the specific condition; injuries may need prompt evaluation.
Recovery & follow-up
Protective dressings or splints and a hand-therapy plan may be needed. Movement is progressed according to the repair. Recovery and return to work depend on both the tissue healing and the function being restored.
Risks & considerations
Discuss stiffness, recurrent deformity, scarring, altered sensation, incomplete functional recovery and further surgery.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Ask what function may be improved, whether rehabilitation is needed, the limits of repair and the expected treatment stages.
