Abdominoplasty addresses excess abdominal skin and, where appropriate, separation or laxity of the abdominal wall. It can be considered after pregnancy or weight change. It is different from liposuction, which mainly removes fat, and it creates a planned scar in exchange for removing loose skin.

What to know

How it is performed

A planned lower-abdominal incision allows removal of excess skin and redraping of the remaining tissues. Muscle-wall repair may be included when indicated. A full operation may reposition the navel; a mini approach addresses a more limited area.

Who may consider a consultation?

People with persistent excess abdominal skin or abdominal-wall concerns may consider assessment. Stable weight, future pregnancy plans, previous scars and general health influence timing and scope.

Recovery & follow-up

Plan help with daily tasks and a gradual return to activity. Dressings, drains and compression may be used. The team provides mobilisation and clot-prevention advice; strenuous activity resumes only after clearance.

Risks & considerations

Discuss scarring, fluid collections, wound-healing problems, altered sensation, infection, blood clots and the potential need for further treatment.

Questions to bring to your consultation

Discuss previous pregnancy or abdominal surgery, future pregnancy plans, scar placement and whether muscle repair is appropriate for your situation.
