Hair Transplant is the transplantation of hair follicles from a donor site to a bald area. In Japan around 1939, Dr Shoji OKUDA did hair transplant for treating traumatic alopecia. Types of Baldness
Male Pattern Baldness
Male Pattern Baldness is also androgenic alopecia. MPB relates to hormones and genetics. Hairs grow in the small cavity-like structure called follicles.
Baldness occurs when follicle stops growing hair. It happens due to DHT deposition at the root of follicles. But the follicle remains alive. Hair can still grow there. Hair loss starts occurring at the frontal hairline and moves backwards. To treat Male Baldness there is only one option “Hair Transplant”.
Female Pattern Baldness
Female pattern baldness is like Male pattern baldness. Except it’s not due to hormones but due to ageing. There are few clues for Female Pattern Baldness. Hair strip from the back of scalp acts as donor area. Reducing scar to least visible state is one of the key factors in successful hair transplant. Before Starting, Hair transplantation area is marked for the need of hair grafts. Possible numbers of grafts are stripped out based upon the need.
Another milestone method in the field of hair restoration is Follicular Unit Extraction. With huge success for FUT, FUE method followed.
Follicular unit Extraction:
Hair Transplantation is popular with FUE hair Transplantation method. In FUE method, with the help of a machine or device, Hole is created around the follicular unit. That whole follicular unit is taken out and implanted in recipient area. FUE is better than FUT method for Hair Restoration because it is scarless. It has some limitation also. - Chances of better result increase with the quality of grafts. FUT method produces highest quality grafts. FUE method damages hair follicle quality.
- FUT method doesn’t damage hair density at donor area. Hairs will hide linear scar in the back. While FUE method leaves follicle unit area dead. It also decreases hair density at donor area.
Advantages of FUE Hair Transplant Method
- FUE method is successful in small hair restoration surgery. It takes time to take out single hair grafts and implant them in the bald area. It limits this method to small scale hair transplantation surgeries.
- Often, FUE is combined with FUT method to extract hair follicles from other parts only when there are insufficient hair follicles in the donor area. But the survival rate of follicles in FUE method decreases.
